During this period, my focus moved away from abstracting the human form and closer to portraying aspects of the human condition in its solitude and in relation to others, and the dynamics that occur between people.
Formally, I was influenced by the European painters of the early twentieth century: Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Remedios Varo, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, and especially Max Beckmann. In his book On My Painting, he wrote, “I am seeking for the bridge that leads from the visible to the invisible…” This idea, and the notion that these artists presented that painting is a spiritual act, deepened the way I thought about painting and started me thinking about the relationship between matter and spirit.
